SCHOLARS OF EXCELLENCE
Junior Seau understands that by positive
role modeling and encouragement of education, the most
vulnerable youth will aspire to better his or her situation
through higher education. The
Scholars of Excellence program was created to recognize
young men and women who are dedicated to both personal and
academic excellence. Financial assistance is granted to
scholars who have the desire, but not the means to achieve
their dreams through higher education.
The ten 2007 Scholars of Excellence
recipients were selected out of over 200 applicants.
They were recognized at a reception at SEAU’s the Restaurant
in July. The winners and their families met with
Foundation board members and the underwriters of each
scholarship.
The Scholars of Excellence program is
underwritten in part by NFL Charities, as well as several
generous local businesses and people in San Diego. This year, the J. Crivello
Foundation sponsored two $10,000 scholarships, QUALCOMM,
Inc. provided $10,000 for a scholarship, and EDCO Disposal
and the Bradley Foundation each gave a $5,000 award.
NFL Charities is sponsoring four scholarships for a combined
$11,500, including two students from Oceanside High School
(Junior’s alma mater). In addition, NFL Charities is
providing $1,000 scholarships for past Scholars of
Excellence that were awarded four year scholarships.
In 2006, the Scholars of Excellence program supported 26
students with over $47,000 in scholarships. This year,
over $60,000 was awarded to San Diego County
students to help them achieve their dreams of higher
education.
